What to Expect: STI Screening and Treatment
Appointment for Screening:
- Recommended tests: gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV
- Appointment length: 20 minutes
Schedule a STI screening when:
- You have no symptoms
- Want only testing with no other sexual health services
- Need testing to see if treatment for a previously treated infection was successful
- Have had sexual contact with someone who tested positive, but you have no symptoms
- If you develop symptoms between scheduling your appointment and the appointment day, please call and notify us
Before your appointment:
- Don’t empty your bladder for one hour before your appointment time
During your appointment:
- Your vitals (height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure) will be gathered by a nurse
- The nurse will confirm that you want STI testing, which tests you want, and that you have no symptoms
- The nurse will collect a urine sample for the gonorrhea and chlamydia tests
- The nurse will collect a blood sample for the syphilis and HIV tests
After your appointment:
Your test results will be sent to you through the patient portal 2 to 5 days after your appointment. If one or more of your tests is positive you will also receive a message to schedule another appointment for
treatment.
Appointment for Treatment:
- Appointment length: 20 minutes
During your appointment:
- Your vitals (height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure) will be gathered by a nurse
- The nurse will confirm the reason for your appointment
- The medical provider will discuss your results with you and your treatment options
- The SHC can provide treatment of gonorrhea and chlamydia. Treatment of HIV and syphilis will
require the involvement of off-campus agencies
- You may be advised to return for retesting after you have completed treatment
